Working in ink, collage and acrylic, Estar explores landscapes and built environments through what they hold rather than simply what is seen. Her work captures moments, memories and atmosphere, alongside the traces of human presence and the cycles of change, loss and renewal within a place.

Often minimalist in approach, Estar works with a limited palette, using colour, symbolism, movement and form to create an emotional sense of place. Fragments and layers are brought together within the work, creating tension and connection, suggesting stories, memories and experiences that may not be immediately visible.

Poetry also forms part of Estar’s creative practice. A songwriter for many years, she integrates poetry into collections where words can convey a depth of meaning separate from the visual understanding, opening up ideas, emotions and concepts that may not be immediately expressed through the paintings alone.

The concept behind each work is considered, while the making is intuitive and immediate, leaving space for the viewer’s own thoughts, memories and feelings.

Estar May is a practising artist, poet and curator based in North Yorkshire. She has held solo exhibitions across North Yorkshire and is a participant in North Yorkshire Open Studios. Her work is held in private collections and has attracted an established following.

Estar is also the founder of Gallery ThirtyThree, which grew from her own artist studio and has developed into an independent contemporary gallery
